A citizen recently emailed that he was unable to find a phone number or hot line on our web site at which he could report an incidence of tax fraud.
Turns out, DOR has had two such numbers for quite a few years, but they were listed on our web site under the heading Criminal Information Bureau, a name that does not necessarily evoke an association with tax fraud.
As of today, those numbers now appear here under the heading "fraud unit."
All tips received on this line are confidential and are checked out. Leave a voice mail message if no one can get to your phone call right away. The numbers to call are 1-800-792-5254 or 1-617-887-6780.
And thanks for your call.

I have information of an individual taking an illegal deduction. I have called the hotline several times have received no call back. This deduction effects my personal return.

i know of a company in worcester that pays people under the table one of whom just got a large disability settlement. The company also has cash customers who's invoices get shredded then the monies pocketed. This companys owner has taken business loans that never went into the business but into his own home, new cars, expensive restaurants, vacations. He also fires people to hire friends paying them under the table. He and his sister embezzled $100,000-$180,000 from the business by depositing check payments from customers into their own accounts... doesnt the state need this money?

Dennis ... what restaurant are you referring to?
Posted by: Robert Bliss | December 30, 2011 at 06:00 AM
Why doesnt the state go after these restaurants who pay no taxes on wages? How can a restaurant that sits 400 people not have anyone on the books. Is the state out of the tax collecting business? These owners pay low wagwes under the table. They spend all the stolen tax money on lavish weddings and 5 new autom0biles for themselves just last year. Also not a dime of money to anyone for Christmas.

I have personal knowledge of a business (tavern) which has been selling food (illegally) for 11 years and has not paid any meals tax, they are not serve certified and their Victualler does not include food. This will be reported to their town BUT is there a report form I could use to present detailed information concerning the meals tax evasion?

This state is harboring a company that blatantly circumlocutes tax payments by nationally promoting workers who do not pay taxes on their cash or 'under-the-table' earnings as house cleaners, babysitters and nannies: Care.com out of Waltham. Just to let y'all know. You're welcome.

Your concern about stone fabrications shops has been forwarded to DOR's Audit unit.
Posted by: Robert Bliss | July 20, 2011 at 08:22 AM
It has become prevelant in the granite industry for stone fabrication shops to pay their full time fabricators (stone cutters, polishers, installers) per piece without reporting any taxable payroll wages. These companies are simply paying their full time workers a square footage price to fabricate and install countertors an amount in the vacinity of $6-9 per sq.ft and lableling their full time workers as subs. This can total up to $500 per day per polisher; and the company is not paying the required taxes on these wages nor are they carrying worker's compensation for these employees. Furthermore, most of these companies are also not charging the required sales tax for the state of MA and CT. These companies include names such as : DISCOVER GRANITE AND MARBLE in Millbury, MA. All Granite Marble in Charlton, MA. SUDBURY GRANITE AND MARBLE, INC. in Mendon, MA, GALAXY MARBLE AND GRANITE in Walpole, MA. Most of these companies are harboring illegal immigrant workers and that is why these employees do not care to pay their fair share of their payroll taxes. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT THIS. We are ligitimate businesses struggling to stay in business and be cost competitive, conducting ourselves in a legal manner.
