In its most recent listing of state/local tax burden, the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan tax research group based in Washington D.C., estimated the average taxpayer in Massachusetts pays 9.5 percent of income in state and local taxes, which placed Massachusetts 23rd nationally, just below the national average of 9.7 percent.
The foundation wrote: "Massachusetts taxpayers pay $5,377 per capita in state and local taxes. Massachusetts has dropped 17 places in the rankings since 1977 by imposing a property tax limitation and keeping a lid on its personal income tax rate, living down its 'Taxachusetts' nickname."

How does Massachusetts stack up with the new sales tax rate of 6.25 percent? Just about in the middle of the pack, 29th nationally.
