As of today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has returned $501,819,683 in refunds to 1,039,277 taxpayers, with the average refund totaling $483, up $13 from the average last year at this time of $470. The total in refunds returned to taxpayers is $15.2 million larger than a year ago.
More than 60 percent of the refunds have been sent back to taxpayers via direct deposit, an increase of nearly 30,000 or 5 percent more than a year ago. The average length of time to deliver those refunds electronically is 3.5 days.
More taxpayers are taking advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Senior Circuit Breaker Tax Credit. Some 246,398 taxpayers (216,483 a year ago) have collected $82.5 million in EITC credits, up 23 percent from a year ago, while 21,859 senior taxpayers (18,827 a year ago) have collected $16.4 million in Circuit Breaker Tax Credits, up 20 percent from a year ago.

So far, DOR has processed 1.330 million returns, up 24,001 from a year ago. Ultimately, DOR expects to process around 3.3 million to 3.4 million tax returns.
