Gov. Deval Patrick has instructed the Massachusetts Department of Revenue to give residents of Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk and Worcester counties additional time to file their state tax return.
Due to extensive flooding those counties have all been declared federal disaster areas by President Obama, and as a result have received a similar extension of the tax filing deadline from the Internal Revenue Service.
The new filing deadline for residents of those counties is midnight May 11.
The extension does not cover residents of Cape Cod and Islands, or residents in counties west of Worcester County.
DOR urges residents in the seven affected counties to file by April 15 if possible, since many of those filers are due refunds which will be delayed if taxpayers wait until May 11 to file.
The filing extension will not change the limited amnesty program for taxpayers with business tax liabilities that began today and runs through June 1. Information on that program and on the filing extension due to the disaster declaration is available on the homepage of www.mass.gov/dor.
